On Friday the 8th of March St. Dominics U16 Camogie team earned a superb victory in the final of the Junior C Championship. They overcame Maynooth CC on a scoreline of 3-7 to 1-5.
On a cold morning the supporter bus set off from St. Dominic’s College to Leixlip GAA club, where supporters were treated to an exhibition of skill, work ethic and passion throughout the game that made us all very proud.
After a six-week hiatus following their semi final win over Santa Sabina, the girls knuckled down and trained hard in preparation for the final, and they certainly reaped the rewards.
We thundered into the game in the early minutes thanks to a classy goal finished by Matilda Treacy. Jocelyn Hanks and Erin Byrne were the leaders of the team throughout the game. They kept the score board ticking over in the first half along with Aisling Bresnan, who continued her goal-scoring form to give us a 2-03 to 0-01 lead at half time.
However, Maynooth CC dominated the first 15 minutes of the second half, scoring 2 goals to bring it to a 4 point game. The St. Dominic’s team increased their work rate and fought their way back into control through an Erin Byrne goal, to the delight of our enthusiastic supporters. It was certainly our best performance of the year with dominant displays coming from Hannah Mulvey, Anyah Kador, Aoibhin Byrne, Aimee Ryan and Leah O’Neill. A special mention has to go to our goalkeeper for the year Grace Tyrell, who was on holidays for the match, and to Rebecca Byrne, Leyla Duff and Niamh McGaughran, who all put the team ahead of their own game to do a stint between the sticks.
It was a proud moment when team captain Nicole Crowe accepted the cup on behalf of the team. The management team of Mr. Banville, Mr. Culleton and Ms. Sweeney would like to thank all of the students for their hard work all year. They were delighted to see the improvement in skill throughout the year and look forward to seeing the players progress with their club teams, which are as follows:
