Past Pupils: Leah Dunne, Emergency First Responder

What years did you attend St Dominic’s College?

2013/2014-2019/2020

What did you do straight after your time in St Dominic’s College?

Third level study

What are you doing now?

Gathering certifications to be considered for in Dublin fire brigade/ national ambulance service competitions.

If you went on to third level education, where did you study? Please name the college, university or institution.

Blackrock Further Education Institute (BFEI)

What subject(s) did you study and what was your qualification (i.e. Diploma, BA, etc)?

QQI Level 5

Can you describe your course in a little detail? How many years did it take? Was it difficult? Were you able to work while you studied? Were there placements?

It is a pre-paramedic fire and ambulance course. We did an introduction into first aid, along with classes on anatomy and physiology, health and safety, word processing, statistics, and with other optional courses.

Did you enjoy college and would you recommend it to others? What were the pros and cons of your course?

In my experience no, not this course in particular, online school with them was very difficult and stressful.

Do you have advice for any of our students who might be interested in your subject or course?

It’s rare to get into the emergency services at a young age so getting work experience and getting different courses and certifications such as manual handling and home nursing. Join organisations such as the Civil Defence in the area that you prefer or other ambulance corpses such as order of Malta, St. John’s, Red Cross etc. You will also need to have a drivers license and it would be even better if you have a C drivers license. The ranks for first responders are First Aid Responder, Emergency First Responder, Emergency Medical Technician, Paramedic, and advanced paramedic, so it is recommended to try to get a higher rank than first aid responder to be considered.

Would you be happy for current students to contact you with questions about your career / college / course choice? (Check any that apply)

Yes – I’m happy to answer emails directly from current students

What are your achievements, prizes or high points since you’ve left school?

During the year in the pandemic while doing my PLC course I got my certification as a Emergency First Responder and have been helping my community in the fight against COVID 19 as a volunteer first responder.

We are grateful to any past pupils of St Dominic's College who take the time to complete this questionnaire. It may help current students who are trying to decide what to do in the future. If you have a few moments to spare, you can complete the questionnaire here.
