About the St Dominic’s Library

The St Dominic’s College Library is full to the brim with books on all sorts of interesting topics. Students are welcome to browse, borrow or speak to the Library Prefects/ Monitors. Our duty is to maintain the shelves/ loaning system and deal with any queries teachers or students may have.

There is a vast collection of books in the library, ranging from history, fiction, non-fiction, science, and well-being, with lots more in between, so there is something for everybody.

All students are entitled to borrow three books at a time: all they need to do is bring the library book, along with their school swipe card to the Library desk. They can borrow three books for two weeks at a time. Books can be returned at the desk or by dropping them into the Returns Box next to the desk at any time.

Opening hours:

Lunchtime: 1.05-1.40

The Library is laid out as follows:

When you come into the Library, the Reading Area is on your right. This is the main part of the Library. You’ll spot the purple bean bags and the colourful shelves. Here you’ll find the following books:

  • Fiction (including Juvenile / Young Adult / Senior & Literary Classics)
  • Literature (Poetry, Plays, Anthologies, Theory)
  • Graphic Novels & Manga
  • Popular History & Geography
  • Nonfiction
  • Reference & Dictionaries
  • Mental Health resources
  • Textbooks and revision books
  • Featured displays for events; new books

At the back, we have the Dominican Collection. This is made up of lots of interesting older books which have come from the Dominican convent or which have been in the school for a very long time.

Fiction is organised alphabetically by authors’ surnames. Other books are organised using Dewey Decimal Classification.

The Library Monitors and Prefects

  • The Library is maintained by a part-time Library Monitor, 6th Year Library Prefects and 5th Year Library Monitors.
  • The book loaning system we use is the Koha library system; this allows us to maintain the book loaning system electronically.

There is a Returns Box next to the Library Desk. You do not need to sign books back in – just drop them back in the box if there is nobody there.

What’s on in the Library?

  • November 2019 – Bookflix – Like Netflix for books!
  • October 2019 – May 2020 – Book in the Bag – All first and second years are required to have a ‘reading’ book in their bags. This is a school literacy initiative. When a teacher is absent (and has not left work), or when a teacher sets a reading class, they will be asked to take out their books to read. There is a huge selection of books in the Library which they can choose from. They are also free to bring a book from home.
November 2019: We had six Transition Years helping out in the Library for their Community Care placements. Thanks for all your help with colourful signs, displays, scanning for the stock take, processing donations and clearing and cleaning out storage cupboards!
