Past Pupils: Emma Kavanagh, Multimedia Studies, DCU

What years did you attend St Dominic’s College?

2006-2012

What did you do straight after your time in St Dominic’s College?

Employment

What are you doing now?

I live in Vancouver Canada, working in fundraising for BC Children’s Hospital Foundation

If you went on to third level education, where did you study? Please name the college, university or institution.

Dublin City University (DCU)

What subject(s) did you study and what was your qualification (i.e. Diploma, BA, etc)?

Multimedia Studies

Can you describe your course in a little detail? How many years did it take? Was it difficult? Were you able to work while you studied? Were there placements?

I started in DCU in 2012, it wasn’t my first choice but actually my 5th. I was devastated after my CAO but quickly saw how fantastic DCU was once I started. Despite this, I didn’t feel my course was right for me and I dropped out and worked for a year. It was the best decision I could have taken and I returned to college the following September to DCU doing something I loved. I made a community of friends at DCU that I still consider one of my closest friend groups and I got involved in so many societies and clubs while I studied. I took on many leaderships roles and volunteered all throughout my time there, it shaped me into the person I am now and influenced my decision to work in the non profit sector right after college.

Did you enjoy college and would you recommend it to others? What were the pros and cons of your course?

Loved it but it was what you made of it, there were little to no exams and it was very much based on group work. It was very practical and hands on but there wasn’t a huge amount of teaching hours so you needed to fill the time yourself.

Would you be happy for current students to contact you with questions about your career / college / course choice? (Check any that apply)

Yes – I’m happy to answer emails directly from current students

What are your achievements, prizes or high points since you’ve left school?

I was part of the Washington Ireland Program in 2015, I was selected to live and work in DC for the summer and I am actively part of their alumni network. I received some awards from university and have loved working in the non profit sector since leaving university, especially here in North America.

We are grateful to any past pupils of St Dominic's College who take the time to complete this questionnaire. It may help current students who are trying to decide what to do in the future. If you have a few moments to spare, you can complete the questionnaire here.
